Validation of Component and Service Federations in Automotive Software Applications

The automotive domain is one of the most promising areas for component and service technologies in the near future. Vehicles are increasingly becoming integrated systems where both intra-vehicle and inter-vehicles interactions require that a set of federated components (services) be properly orchestrated. The interactions and cooperations among the members of such federations suggest the use of well-known architectural styles to properly orchestrate the components. Among the many styles, we suggest two specific approaches: The publishsubscribe approach is interesting for intra-vehicle cooperations, while the serviceoriented paradigm is appealing for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-environment interactions. We believe that available modeling notations are enough to specify these systems, but what is still missing is a proper support to the validation phase. This is why, in this paper we introduce component models and tailor our research on validating software architectures to the needs of the automotive domain. We present our approaches for analyzing publish/subscribe and service-oriented applications through model-checking techniques and exemplify them on simple examples from the automotive domain.
